Themed exhibition in Reading room - June 2023

25th June 2023 marks the 120th anniversary of George Orwell's birth.

Born Eric Arthur Blair in India in 1903, the British author George Orwell is best known for his dystopian and socially critical novels “Animal Farm” and “1984”. Orwell's oeuvre is still relevant today, as it triggers critical discussion, encourages questioning of authority and a critical examination of ruling systems, showing how important and at the same time difficult it is to uphold and protect democratic principles.

On display in the Teßmann Library’s Reading room you will find various editions of George Orwell's world-famous novels "1984" and "Animal Farm", but also essays and short stories from his time as an official of the British colonial police in Burma (today Myanmar), as a soldier in the Spanish Civil War or as a homeless person in the slums of London and Paris.

The selected media will remain on display in the Reading room until the end of June and can be borrowed.
